Historical judgement in UK as a foreign national awaits sentence for torture!

20th July 2005

There has been speculation that infamous Adam Zahir will face similar charges in the UK. According to spokesman for the UK Friends of Maldives/Maldives Aid- there have been discussions with leading human rights lawyers in the UK and a dossier of testimonies of torture by several individuals is being compiled. The decision whether to prosecute Adam Zahir will rest with the Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith who has stated "An international convention and English law allow the trial in England of anyone who has committed torture or hostage-taking".

According to FOM/Maldives Aid spokesperson Adam Zahir was recently in UK (Manchester) to attend a member of his families graduation ceremony. His trip was kept secret to avoid the attentions of FOM/Maldives Aid who see Zahir as being the instigator of most of the cases of torture in the last decade in the Maldives.

According to the FOM/Maldives Aid spokesman "Torture in the Maldives is no longer ignored by the international community. FOM will continue to highlight human rights abuses in the Maldives no matter who or which party is in power. The new tourism minister Mr Shaugee would be wise to keep Adam Zahir advised that Tourists do not want to travel to a country where they know that torture could be taking place on a nearby island."
