Besotted with Baa'rah!

Today I have reached one of the most beautiful islands in the Upper North Province. The Island is in the shape of the letter 'Baa' in Arabic, which is also the name of the island, Baa'rah. The North tip and South tip of the island caves in towards the middle creating an inlet which suddenly opens up into a huge swimming pool like lagoon. The boat I'm on almost glides towards the old jetty on a carpet of turquoise water... What bliss!

It wasn't just the beauty that blew me off... but the most intriguing history that exists here that the folks are very proud of. I have two reasons to be here today. I have started documenting the history of this beautiful island so that future generations have full knowledge of their history. This is something very close to my heart and I feel that it's already too late as the old folks who have this knowledge are dying out and there isn't enough time.

I mean to cover this history with video, audio and written documentations. Tonight I have few interviews with these people and I can't wait to!! I am so amazed at what I'm learning and shocked that the history of these islands aren't documented properly and was never taught at school level. I believe that everyone big or small, should have access to our history and should be proud of it. And I mean a history that is documented and taught as it is. Not twisted and warped like it was through out the history of Maldives. Right now I'm doing this alone. I wish more people would volunteer and support this cause with me. People in the islands have been wonderful and very eager to help with whatever information they have. This is one of the most exciting projects ever!!

Everyone has a right to the knowledge of their history. And I mean to do whatever I can to make this happen. Nothing is going to stop me!

My second reason to be here? It's a long story, something to do with the swamps and mosquitoes here... it's yet to come! =)
